While brainstorming with my wife Anita, she came up with the name for my hobby business, “Pen for Your Thoughts”, a play on the old saying of “penny for your thoughts” (for all of you kids out there).
Field Notes’ Spring limited edition is called “Lucky”, an ode to the since retired penny. Sadly, my initial attempts at approval for selling Field Notes were to no avail, likely my own making.
Fast forward to the Saint Louis Pen Show. I attended solo and was receiving word that our sweet golden retriever coincidentally named “Lucky”, had taken a turn for the worse. The good boy had been battling lymphoma for a few months and stopped eating the weekend of the show. Our kids had named him Lucky because they felt “lucky” to finally be getting a dog. Sadly, we knew it was time for him to cross the rainbow bridge. The Monday I returned, we took him to the vet and they concurred, it was time. Our family was devastated. Anita posted a great tribute to Lucky on her Instagram account, and life in our house hasn’t been the same without him.
Coincidentally (again), the next day I received approval to sell Field Notes, something I had been (lightly) working on for months. As someone who believes everything happens for a reason, this was an undeniable message.
To me, the colors of the “Lucky” limited edition are perfect. Embossed and bound with copper foil and staples, I can’t help but see a shade of our good boy contained in these memo books. Hopefully you’ll find luck or whatever it is you seek in life, and that one of these memo books will help you on your journey.
